For anyone who's curious, The Baron was intended to be the antagonist from the very start. Look back at his dialogue over the past year - particularly near the beginning - and you may notice strategically-planted quotations from Emperor Palpatine of the Star Wars movies. Some are slightly altered, and most are from the newer films 'cause the original stuff was too dark or topical to properly slot in (The Baron talking about the Dark Side of the Force? Bit of a giveaway), but there you go.
Sorry, Ember. I felt so bad doing that commission for you, knowing this was gonna happen. But, hey, can't spoil the plot, can I?
